Froggies

How can you lose a frog in a small fish tank?

home

Yesterday we had 5 – this afternoon I could only find 4……….. It took a lot of hunting to find number 5.  We do however have 5 very full frogs.  Yesterday I bought them flies – when we put the flies in they were trying to get them through the lid of the container…………. last night one of them had a fly walking across it’s head and didn’t attempt to eat it.  Does anyone know – can you overfeed frogs????

Feathers

Posted in Family on December 29, 2008 by mrscownz

During our walk around the lake the kids picked up a couple (or fifty!!!) of feathers.  Cam made me promise I would take a photo of his favourite ones & blog it…..

So here they are!

And what is it with birds and baths.  It has been raining all day, but this bird still needed a bath in our pond.  You woulda thought he was probably wet enough!

What did Dad & MJ have in common????

Due to (possibly fake) news reports that Michael Jackson has Alpha-1, the disorder that resulted in Dad’s lung transplant is getting lots of press…….

Today at Bunnings we bought bird netting, in the hope that this year we get more of these than the birds…….

But if the birds get them, we always have the passion fruit this year……

Riding Practice

Posted in Family on December 27, 2008 by mrscownz

Nana B gave Albie and Miss D new bikes for Christmas.  Last night we took them to the nearby soccer fields to learn how to use the hand brakes and the gears.

Tonight we went and practiced riding over sticks, so they know what to do when we go mountain biking.

Miss D needed extra coaching:

But Albie has it sussed:

And Cam’s had it nailed for ages….

After a while Albie just wanted to collect sticks…..

Cam and Dad decided duelling was more fun….

And Miss D tried to get all the prickles from the onehunga weed out of her tyres…..

So we came home to trifle (for everyone else) and a neenish tart for me….. :-) Courtesy of Nana C – gotta love Nanas!!!!

Hamilton Lake

This morning we headed out early to walk around the Lake.  We tricked the bids into thinking we had food by rustling a plastic bag, and I managed to get some close-ups of coots…. whose feet had the kids in fits…….

And Puk’s…..

We were awed by the size of a Gum tree….

Then we came across a man launching his model boat.  The detail on the boat was incredible, and it moved really well in the water – even towing two tug boats.

There was a pohutukawa in full bloom

We walked from one side, round to the play ground

And then back to the car on the other side of the lake, past water lillies, spider webs, submerged canoes and nesting birds.

The kids did really well, they walked 4 km and played on the playground.  Next time we will probably bike around though :-)

Unfortunately it tuckered out Dad who is rather over having a cold.

Christmas Pavlova

Posted in Albie, Cam, Family on December 24, 2008 by mrscownz

We were given one of the wonderfully huge fluffy Cowells pavlovas for Christmas.  It latest nearly two weeks at home before we ate it!!!  So the boys and I hauled out the Edmonds cook book  pav-recipe

and had a go at making one today.

Cam thought he would forsake these…

And he lasted about a minute before it was Albies turn….

Then they both gave up and the electric beaters were hauled out of their box….

And things were looking promising…..

And Albie made sure it cooked okay….

Low Pressure…………….

Posted in Family on December 22, 2008 by mrscownz

Rob and I went and had our blood pressure taken this morning…. It was a bit of a contest to see who could get the lowest. Rob went first 118/80…..but the winner was 118/70.   Guess I need a more stressful job LOL and maybe we should get Robs done after the holidays.

We went to Nana’s today before we all went out for lunch….

Nana suggested to Cam that it was time for him to stop growing… No idea why!

School Choir

Posted in Family on December 6, 2008 by mrscownz

Friday night was the school end of year picnic.  It is a fun event, where parents and senior students play netball (drawn), touch rugby (drawn) , soccer (drawn) and hockey (won by the parents by 1 goal!). They had Egg & Spoon races, gumboot throws, sack races, three legged races, a parachute, Mr Whippy, and a hot dog & chip and candy floss seller!

And then the schools cultural groups perform.  We had Kapa haka, dance and choir.  The Kapa Haka was excellent, they get better each year.  The dance group did two dances from the Jungle Book earlier in the year and did well and then it was the choir.  They too were good – and Miss D was in the front row!
